Engagement in Video Games Part 2 Brief 02

THEORY AND PRACTICE

Engagement in Video Games

Brief 02

One of the differences between game and film narrative is that film narrative is not generally designed to be interactive with the audience and it's main goal is to keep viewers interested and lead them further into the story the more you watch the more you get to learn, and though many games are similar in they scene that the further into the game the more you learn, it is due to your actions that will determine if you can progress further as for a film you just have to watch to see what happens next and don't need to do anything more. For games it is essential for them to be interactive otherwise they would lose their purpose of being games. Some games can sometimes go to far with their cinematic scenes, from my experience with games it often gets a bit boarding and I just want to skip ahead to the next level.

Films and games are quite different with their narrative and how it is told. The only real difference is that with both of them you usually have to participate with either watching or interacting with them to find out more about the story. Film's selling points are their story and how it's told, if people don't like the film then they won't watch it so this is crucial that they get it right, where as games rely heavily on their game play and how interactive they are. They have small areas of cinematic scenes which are sometimes used more than their need to be but served their purpose with revelling more of the story giving the player more than just game play, depending on the type of game it is.
